An Introduction to Representational Art

The word representational, when used to describe a work of art, means that the work depicts something easily recognized by most people. Throughout our history as art-creating humans,  most  art has been representational. Even when art was symbolic, or non-figurative, it was usually representative of something. Abstract (non-representational) art is a relatively recent  invention and didnt evolve until the early 20th-century. What Makes Art Representational? There are three basic types of art: representational, abstract, and non-objective. Representational is the oldest, best-known, and most popular of the three. Abstract art typically starts with a subject that exists in the real world but then presents those subjects in a new way. A well-known  example of abstract art is Picassos Three Musicians.  Anyone looking at the painting would understand that its subjects are three individuals with musical instruments–but neither the musicians nor their instruments are intended to replicate reality. Non-objective art does not, in any way, replicate or represent reality. Instead, it explores color, texture, and other visual elements without reference to natural or constructed world. Jackson Pollock, whose work involved complex splatters of paint, is a good example of a non-objective artist. Representational art strives to depict reality. Because representational artists are creative individuals, however, their work need  not look precisely like the object they are representing. For example, Impressionist artists such as Renoir and Monet used patches of color to create visually compelling, representative paintings of gardens, people, and locations. History of Representational Art Representational art got its start many millennia ago with Late Paleolithic figurines and carvings. Venus of Willendorf, while not too terribly realistic, is clearly meant to show the figure of a woman. She was created around 25,000 years ago and is an excellent example of the earliest representational art. Ancient examples of representational art are often in the form of sculptures, decorative friezes, bas-reliefs, and busts representing real people, idealized gods, and scenes from nature. During the middle ages, European artists focused largely on religious subjects. During the Renaissance, major artists such as Michaelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci created extraordinarily realistic paintings and sculptures. Artists were also commissioned to paint portraits of members of the nobility. Some artists created workshops in which they trained apprentices in their own style of painting. By the 19th century, representative artists were beginning to experiment with new ways of expressing themselves visually. They were also exploring new subjects: instead of focusing on portraits, landscapes, and religious subjects, artists experiments with socially relevant topics related to the Industrial Revolution. Present Status Representational art is thriving. Many people have a higher degree of comfort with representational art than with abstract or non-objective art. Digital tools are providing artists with a wider range of options for capturing and creating realistic images.   Additionally, the workshop (or atelier) system continues to exist, and many of these teach figurative painting exclusively. One example is the School of Representational Art in Chicago, Illinois. There are also whole societies dedicated to representational art. Here in the United States, the Traditional Fine Arts Organization comes quickly to mind. A web search using the keywords of representational art (your geographical location) should turn up venues and/or artists in your area.

Being aware of and understanding the changing rates of income inequality in the U.S throughout history is crucial in order to progress by making positive changes in today’s society. Historically, there have been many instances where the incomes of individuals have fluctuated and caused great changes to the nation, especially post World War II period until the present day. The income share of the wealthiest 1% of Americans was the same in 2006 as it was in 1917 (Jansson, 2012, p.45). The years from the end of World War II into the 1970s were ones of substantial economic growth. In summary, the period from post-World War II until about the late 1960’s, income inequality was not as great as it is today and was more steady, but it still existed and greatly influenced the income inequality in present day America. Beginning in the 1970s, income growth for households in the middle and lower classes decreased, while incomes at the top continued to increase (Stone et al., 2015). Economical issues- during the times of economic downturn, there is chance that the peoples preference may shift from high priced chocolates to low priced ones. The economic climate can also lead to a failure of the commercial business or the franchisee business of the company Sociological issues- the companys products are also driven by the seasonal needs of the people like during Christmas, Easter, Valentines Day etc. There was a excellent growth of the company during this time as there was a remodelling of the products and the merchandising. Technological issues- the company continuously upgrades their technologies so as to improve their services. Thorntons are aiming to increasing the market share to 8 million in the USA and 3 million in Australia. Thorntons multi-channel business model, which have 175franchises, 260 stores, a presence on the online and a business selling commercially to the major convenience stores, retailers, grocers, and independent retailers, mostly in the UK but with a rising international supply, the company is able to serve the needs and demands of the customers. There is a worry that the company may fail to differentiate it in the premium category next to names such as Hotel Chocolat and Green Blacks (Thorntons- Katapult, 2015). The company still charges a higher price than mass marketers Cadbury's or Mars. In conclusion, it is obvious that Thorntons is facing fairly tough time in the chocolate industry. If they feel like increasing to the other untapped markets, they have to initially work strategically on their margins of net profit. It is seen that their net profit margins were low in some of the years thus hindering the success. Thus the company must see that the company meets the demands of the people by providing attractive and innovative products and packages. Top 25 U.S. Schools for Chinese Students

It’s common knowledge that an increasing number of international students, especially students from China, are applying and gaining admission to U.S. colleges. According to the Institute of International Education, there are 304,404 international students in the U.S. from China. They made up a third of the total number of international students enrolled in the 2014 - 2015 academic year. That means 1 in 3 international students is from China!But where are all of these students going? There’s no public database with this information, but the best (if not most accurate) method is to look at the number of F-1 Visas distributed by each school. Here’s the top 25 list for 2015: 1. University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign 2. University of Southern California 3. Purdue University 4. Northwestern University 5. Columbia University 6. Michigan State University 7. Ohio State University 8. University of California - Los Angeles 9. Indiana University 10. University of California - Berkeley 11. New York University 12. Pennsylvania State University 13. University of Minnesota 14. University of Washington 15. Arizona State University 16. University of Michigan 17. Boston University 18. Illinois Institute of Technology 19. Rutgers University 20. University of Texas - Dallas 21. University of Wisconsin - Madison 22. University of California - San Diego 23. Carnegie Mellon University 24. SUNY Stony Brook 25. Syracuse University While the F-1 Visa statistic isn’t perfect, it does give an indication of where Chinese international students are applying, and getting accepted. You might think that Chinese students are shooting only for the Ivy League or the top tier private universities, but, on this list of 25 universities, only 7 are private. Ken Chen, a partner in L.E.K.’s Shanghai office weighed in recruiting efforts to hire Chinese graduates returning to China, known â€Å"hai gui†, or â€Å"sea turtle†. â€Å"We do hire Chinese students from the U.S. and the U.K because their English is better, and what I want out of it is a more mature person who is better socially,† says Chen. â€Å"I think what an American college education gets you is knowing how to socialize, having not just memorized things but emotional intelligence and knowing how to think and how to solve problems.† So, for Chinese students, a U.S. education, even if not considered â€Å"brand name† in China, is still highly desirable. It provides exposure to Western education styles and the opportunity to mingle and communicate with non-Chinese students. For the average Chinese student applying for admission to the U.S., a public school such as Indiana University (especially if the school is well known for a particular program such as Indiana’s business program) provides similar value as what many international students see as top tier school. On the university side, international students aren’t just attractive for private universities, public universities are actively recruiting international students as well. Many cite the increase in international student enrollment to a university’s need to supplement in-state funding with full-tuition-paying students. Take UIUC, Purdue and Indiana University for example. These top 10 schools put in a lot of effort to attract and welcome Chinese international students. UIUC hosts workshops to introduce American sports to international students, and even broadcast sporting events in Chinese. Similarly, Purdue organizes welcoming events, and Indiana now has an additional newspaper - in Chinese. So, maybe, this list shouldn’t come as a surprise at all.
